Another soccer painting! The girl on the left is made up, but on the right is my childhood friend, Pablo Mahfoud. Growing up he was the goalie, but he was a complete player as well so definitely one of the better guys in the group. He can also rock the pink on occasion.
There’s a high-res version of this piece available here. I like how some of the details came out.
As an aside, I was a complete bench player for most of my soccer career growing up except when I played in Mexico. For some reason I did pretty well there. One of the first times I was subbed in I remember running to play some defense, somebody on the other team made a long pass so I jumped in midair to intercept him and thought it would be a great idea for kick his leg in midair. Got yellow carded, got subbed right the hell out. I’m sure being a 4th grader doing that to a 3rd grader looked mighty silly, but the memory in my head looks pretty epic.
You can probably tell cause its kind of big sized (as opposed to game res) but its all done in Illustrator :) Fun challenge.
Republique got funded! I honestly had my doubts, so this is a pretty good day. made a small piece of fanart (wallpaper friendly) for the occasion :)
Drawing soccer poses is fun because you get to draw “action” without it having to be violent and without having to be the ethereal like dancing. You can have immediate purpose, motion and fluidity to what you’re drawing. It’s one of the better sports to capture, I think.
Ive been drawing soccer since I was a little kid. Back in school i drew soccer comics like, all the time. maybe its time to get back to that? The most fun part was drawing your friends as soccer players, so here’s my friend Jorge (aka:Lalo) from Mexican middle school :)
